Greeted by a cheering crowd of members of the Class of 2012, the freshmen streamed into the school for an afternoon of Spartan activities. Principal Sister Regina Havens IHM started off the festivities with welcoming remarks. She was followed by Dave LePoidevin, Director of Admissions, and Helen Sanford, Director of Campus Ministry. Three seniors, Mona Poblete, Kyle Adam and Patrick Burke spoke to the class from a student point of view with great words of encouragement and optimism. Skits, icebreakers, giveaways, games, and a pizza party followed. • The IHS cheerleaders volunteered on 10/2/2011 to support the efforts of the runners/walkers in this year's Steeplechase Distance Run in Hillsborough, NJ.  For three years, the Steeplechase Run has been organized by Somerset Medical Center to raise cancer awareness, a disease which affects so many in our community.  The event featured a 5K run/walk during which the IHS cheerleaders organized a water station (they handed out nearly 15 gallons of water and 300 cups), created signs to support the Progin's Players team in particular, and cheered and encouraged everyone as they neared the finish line.   The Progin's Players team was organized to support, Ian Progin, head boys' basketball coach at Hillsborough, who was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma, a brain cancer, in May 2010.  He has two small children and the Hillsborough community has planned many events to help support the family.  Progin's Players had over 700 participants registered for the Steeplechase event including many Immaculata runners/walkers.

  • Volunteers in the Immaculata High School Campus Ministry program came together with Legal Services of New Jersey to help the organization file or shred confidential documents. Legal Services of New Jersey, or the L.S.N.J., is a non-profit organization in Edison, New Jersey. It helps the poor who are unable to afford a lawyer. The Spartan volunteers travel to Edison after school to help file or shred case documents for three hours once a month. Their goal is to reduce the backlog of private documents on closed cases that must be destroyed. In addition, students helped file papers essential to current cases.Immaculata High School senior Lauren Cherichella of Branchburg gave her perspective on the volunteer program. “I enjoy shredding at L.S.N.J. because it contributes to helping someone in need indirectly. By shredding a couple hundred pieces of paper, I help people in need, as well as the environment. It’s a great feeling.” (Posted 11/15/11)

  • foodshopping_webLast year Immaculata students donated over 25,000 hours in service to the community. One of the most popular activities: food shopping. Every two weeks an Immaculata Campus Ministry van filled with volunteers goes to a local grocery store, where students purchase older citizens’ groceries and deliver them to their homes. Catholic Charities recommends the names to the school. There are two specific people who request Spartan shoppers only. The semi-monthly event has a two-fold benefit: it helps the elderly get their groceries and fresh produce and shows the students how to live out the teachings of social justice. According to Gabrielle McGovern of Branchburg, “It was a great learning experience to help others who are not able to get food by themselves.” (Posted 11/4/11)
